Long ago, this area was a thriving Atlantic White Cedar Swamp—a special kind of wetland that supported wildlife, held deep cultural meaning, and gave early settlers the name “Lebanon” in reference to the famous biblical Cedars of Lebanon.\n\n\n\nOver time, the swamp has changed. The cedar trees are gone, and what remains has been impacted by development, invasive plants, and other pressures. But there is a chance to bring this place back to life.\n\n\n\nJoin Harley Monteiro, a Wilmington native and conservation professional, as he shares the history of Lebanon Swamp, why it’s such an important and unique habitat, and the vision for restoring it. Growing up in a neighborhood next to the swamp, Harley spent his childhood exploring these woods and learning to love nature—a passion that eventually led him to work in national parks across the country. Now he’s bringing that knowledge home.\n\n\n\nAt this session, you’ll learn:\n\n\n\n\nThe fascinating history and ecology of Lebanon Swamp\n\n\n\nWhy Atlantic White Cedar swamps are so rare in Massachusetts\n\n\n\nWhat restoration could look like here in Wilmington\n\n\n\nWays residents can stay connected with this effort\n\n\n\n\nCome hear the story of Lebanon Swamp and imagine what its future could be.
