SUMMARY:Willowdale Walk & Talk: Improving Fish Passage – 10 am
DESCRIPTION:\nSaturday, April 25, 202610:00–11:00 AMWillowdale Mill Reservation, 196-298 Winthrop St., South Hamilton, MA 01938\n\n\n\nJoin us for a guided walk and talk at Willowdale Dam to learn about an exciting river restoration project designed to help migratory fish move freely through the Ipswich River once again.\n\n\n\nHear directly from the partners making this project possible:\n\n\n\n\nJoseph Holbeche, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries\n\n\n\nNeil Shea, Ipswich River Watershed Association\n\n\n\nA member of Greenbelt’s Stewardship Team\n\n\n\nBob Foote of Foote Brothers Canoe\n\n\n\n\nTogether, we’ll explore the proposed improvements at Willowdale Dam, including the construction of a hybrid nature-like fishway and the removal of an outdated USGS gage dam downstream. These changes will reconnect upstream habitat for migratory fish by creating a more natural, fish-friendly path around the dam.\n\n\n\nThe new fishway will use pools, notched stone weirs, and gentle curves to mimic natural river conditions, making it easier for fish to swim upstream. Additional work will stabilize the existing dam, improve resilience during high flows, and reshape the riverbed below the dam to guide fish toward the new passage.\n\n\n\nThis project represents a long-term investment in the health of the Ipswich River and the species that depend on it. Come walk the site, ask questions, and learn how thoughtful design can help rivers function the way they’re meant to.\n\n\n\nAll are welcome. Dress for the weather and walking on uneven terrain.\n\n\n\nThis event is currently at full capacity so we added as second walk at noon. Sign up for that one here ( https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/pojIKrrA7pXua6likTBJpA ).\n\n\n\n\n\nA note on parking: Please note the bridge on Winthrop Street is closed. There is limited parking accessing this site via Topsfield Road, there is plenty of parking from Highland Street.\n\n\n\n\n
