Climate Crisis and Inequity are Huge Problems

Projections, available in the state’s Drought Management Plan, predict more frequent short and long term droughts in the future due to climate change. A new phenomenon called “flash droughts” is also predicted. Flash droughts standout from other droughts for their fast onset and rapid deterioration in conditions. Year round and across the state we are also seeing:

  • Long stretches and frequent occurrence of above normal temperatures.
  • Record-low stream flows and groundwater levels in spite of higher rainfall amounts overall

A more consistent approach is needed across regions and statewide for drought planning, mitigation, and communication. At a recent meeting of the Water Management Act Advisory Committee, the conversation turned to the responsibility of advocacy groups like Ipswich River. Robert Kearns of Braintree noted that, “Not all communities have a watershed association looking out for them. The commonwealth may have to take action on behalf of communities who do not have the capacity for that sort of grassroots oversight.” The Plan makes it clear that many more entities, especially the State, need to do a better job educating the public about the necessity to better preserve our limited and precious water resources.

Heidi Ricci of Mass Audubon added that, “having inequity doesn’t contribute to compliance. As we are seeing more frequent droughts, it’s clear we need to do something here. We have to stop playing the blame game. Water is too important to do that.”
