RIVER WARDENS

RIVER WARDENS

The River Warden volunteers keep the Ipswich River Water Trail landings, riverside rest stops, and routes are in good condition. Along the River Watch monitors, they are our eyes and ears on the river.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The River Warden volunteers are stewards of the Ipswich River Water Trail. River Wardens volunteer throughout the paddling season (May through October) assessing the condition of landings and river segments, cleaning up litter and trimming woody debris where needed. Blow-downs and other woody debris are important for the ecology of the river, so our River Wardens always carefully assess each situation before taking any appropriate action. See the following video for guidance on managing woody debris.

If you’re a confident river goer and you’d like to aid in stewardship for the Ipswich River Water Trail, you might be River Warden material!

RESOURCE FOR VOLUNTEERS

There are Ipswich River Water Trail landings, river sections, and tributaries in need of River Wardens (see map to the right). Reach out to Ryan O'Donnell, [email protected] if you are interested.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Everyone can help maintain the Ipswich River Water Trail:

  • Always carry-in, carry-out.
  • Don't pass it by, if you see litter while walking or paddling, pick it up.
  • Only put in at designated landings to avoid eroding banks.
  • Keep an eye out for invasive plants.
