We are thrilled to announce two new Board members elected by our members at the April 25th Annual Meeting. Dan Heiter from Topsfield and Paul Charos from Wakefield. Both of these fine gentlemen have been river advocates for decades and we are thrilled to have them on board. Happy to share a few words about themselves from each of them below. Please join me in welcoming Paul & Dan to the Ipswich River Team!
Welcome Paul Charos!
For as far back as I can remember when growing up, I have always sought out wild places to experience and enjoy. Mountains, forests, and wild rivers have always been close to my heart and from that passion for these places over the years it became my vocation. Over the past 45+ years I have paddled, fished, swam, photographed, and truly enjoyed the Ipswich River and tributaries. This watershed is a scenic and wonderful resource that sometimes anonymously borders our byways and lives, yet is so integral to all those who both recreate in and require its resources. As with any resource, I feel that it must be conserved and protected and kept in as pristine a state as possible for the health and well=being of those who depend on it for a water source and for the river itself.
Welcome Dan Heiter!
I have worked for 30 years as a research scientist at New England Biolabs, studying and producing enzymes that cut DNA to enable gene splicing and other technologies. Recently, I pressed to install solar arrays at Biolabs, and am currently pursuing ways to reduce or offset greenhouse gas emissions, to drive the company towards carbon neutrality (besides doing the job they pay me for). Every year, I organizes several teams from Biolabs for the Run of the Charles canoe relay race, which we sometimes win! I live on the Ipswich river with my wife, Sally; we have two grown sons, who when they are home accompany me and whoever is up for it on the “Heiter Challenge”—boating from my backyard to the mouth of the Ipswich, a distance of 22.2 miles. I’ve been active in IRWA for many years, doing river monitoring with Sally, helping run the Paddle-a-Thon, maintaining and installing the docks at IRWA and anything else I can think of to help.
