The purpose of this event was to prepare the stream flowing out of Hood Pond for the planned reintroduction of river herring after an absence of nearly 100 year.‹¯›nbsp;‹¨›/span‹˜›‹¨›/p‹˜›‹¨›p‹˜›‹¨›span style‹´›‹²›font-weight: 400;‹²›‹˜›This event was the start of a river herring restoration project in Hood Pond.‹¯›nbsp; Hood Pond was a historic spawning area which we identified as an ideal place to begin a restocking program. The goal is to reintroduce herring to imprint on Hood Pond and start a local population that can grow over time. Young herring will be stocked in the pond in late spring, where they will stay for the summer before instinctively searching for the outlet on their way to the ocean. After maturing in the ocean for several years, herring should return to the pond they came from to complete their life. This remarkable fish once thrived in the Ipswich River watershed, but dams and other barriers to their annual spring spawning migration as well as other threats to their population, have caused the runs to largely disappeared.‹¯›nbsp; We want to give the fish the best chance possible of finding their way, so we are preparing the channel ahead of time.‹¯›nbsp;‹¨›/span‹˜›‹¨›/p‹˜›‹¨›p‹˜›‹¨›span style‹´›‹²›font-weight: 400;‹²›‹˜›Groups of volunteers walked along the stream and clipped back some of the aquatic vegetation to make sure there was a clear path through the cattails and pickerelweed at the start of the stream that connects the pond to Pye Brook. We work with many great partner organizations such as Trout Unlimited and the Sea Run Brook Trout Coalition where we all share a common interest to improve fish passage and promote fisheries restoration. This task was also the beginning of a larger project to assess barriers and restoration potential throughout the entire Pye Brook and Howlett Brook area. We look forward to a bright future for fisheries in the Ipswich River as a result of the work contributed by these and our many dedicated partners. ‹¨›/span‹˜›‹¨›/p‹˜›” animation_group=”{‹²›selected‹²›:‹²›no‹²›,‹²›yes‹²›:{‹²›animation‹²›:{‹²›animation‹²›:‹²›fadeInUp‹²›,‹²›delay‹²›:‹²›200‹²›}}}” responsive=”{‹²›desktop_display‹²›:{‹²›selected‹²›:‹²›yes‹²›},‹²›tablet_landscape_display‹²›:{‹²›selected‹²›:‹²›yes‹²›},‹²›tablet_display‹²›:{‹²›selected‹²›:‹²›yes‹²›},‹²›smartphone_display‹²›:{‹²›selected‹²›:‹²›yes‹²›}}” class=”” __fw_editor_shortcodes_id=”4074a177a54e2466dc9549558a8a4a28″ _array_keys=”{‹²›text_advanced_styling‹²›:‹²›text_advanced_styling‹²›,‹²›animation_group‹²›:‹²›animation_group‹²›,‹²›responsive‹²›:‹²›responsive‹²›}” _fw_coder=”aggressive”][/text_block]
