When people think about volunteering with the Ipswich River Watershed Association, they often picture collecting scientific data in the field, leading educational programs, helping at community events, or spending time out on the water in our kayaks. While those opportunities are incredibly important, there’s another group of volunteers whose work often goes unnoticed but is absolutely essential to everything we do.
These are the volunteers who mow the fields, repair our docks, clear fallen trees from trails, pull invasive plants, weed gardens, spread mulch, maintain our grounds, and tackle the countless projects that keep Riverbend welcoming, safe, and accessible.
It isn’t always glamorous. There are no kayaks, no special events, and often no audience. It’s sweaty, dirty work that happens in the heat of summer, after storms, or during the first chilly days of spring. Yet every visitor who walks our trails, launches a kayak, attends a program, or enjoys our property benefits from their dedication.
As a small nonprofit, we simply could not maintain Riverbend and the surrounding property without these generous volunteers. Every hour they give allows our staff to focus more time on protecting the Ipswich River, educating the next generation of environmental stewards, and serving our communities.
This year we’ve welcomed new volunteer mowing crews who are helping keep our outdoor learning spaces and trails maintained. Others have repaired sections of our docks, improved trail conditions, cared for gardens, removed invasive species, and taken on projects that might otherwise remain on our ever-growing to-do list.
Their work may not always be visible, but its impact is everywhere.
To every volunteer who has picked up a shovel, a rake, a drill, a string trimmer, or a mower, thank you. Your willingness to roll up your sleeves and take on the jobs that simply need doing makes a tremendous difference.
