Meditative Paddle with Wisdom of Thoreau
Join us for a reflective paddle inspired by the writings of Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862), author of Walden and a foundational voice in the environmental movement. A devoted Transcendentalist, Thoreau viewed nature as sacred, once writing: “In wilderness is the preservation of the world.”
This special paddle will blend gentle movement on the river with moments of meditation and reflection, guided by Rev. Stacey Keane of First Church in Ipswich, who also serves on the leadership team of NS SING. River navigation will be led by Kent Harrop, also of NS SING. This paddle is a partnership between IRWA and North Shore SING (Spirituality in Nature Group). Learn more about NS SING.
We’ll launch from the IRWA dock and explore both upstream and downstream, depending on conditions and group comfort. Expect a peaceful journey with stretches of paddling against a moderate current and around river bends, followed by a relaxing return.
Kayaks and canoes are available courtesy of IRWA, including paddles and life jackets, or you are welcome to bring your own. This experience is best for those with basic kayaking or canoeing skills and sufficient core and arm strength for upstream paddling.
Space is limited—reserve your spot today!
Please note: All participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Safety is our top priority, but outdoor activities carry inherent risk.
This hike is part of a series of events Ipswich River Watershed Association is holding in conjunction with North Shore Spirituality in Nature Group (NS SING). NS SING provides monthly outdoor events exploring the watershed once a month via hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking or canoeing. SING offers a contemplative, meditative experience providing opportunities for deepening spiritually in the midst of nature.
