GREENSCAPES

Greenscapes are beautiful landscapes that protect our water, and save you time and money.

GREENSCAPES COALITION

"Greenscapes" are gardens and landscapes cultivated using environmentally-friendly landscaping and gardening practices. Greenscapes conserve water and avoid using pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers, while also producing healthy lawns and plants with deep root systems.

The Greenscapes North Shore Coalition is a collaborative of municipalities and partner organizations, focusing on stormwater and watershed related issues. Specifically, Greenscapes provides outreach and education to support municipal compliance with water-related regulatory requirements, including the MS4 Stormwater and the Water Management Act permits. Since its founding in 2007, Greenscapes partners have delivered outreach and education services across the North Shore. Partner organizations include:

KEEPING WATER CLEAN

Keeping Water Clean is a fun, hands-on educational program provided for your 5th grade elementary students. The interactive program demonstrates how the built environment affects the natural watercycle, what happens to water when it enters a storm drain, how water flows through the local watershed, and how water can be cleaned and conserved. We offer this program in one school of your choosing per school year. For an additional fee, Keeping Water Clean can be delivered to more of your elementary schools.

GETTING INVOLVED

Towns can join the Greenscapes North Shore program, a regional coalition with Ipswich River Watershed Association, Eight Towns and the Great Marsh, and Salem Sound Coastwatch. The purpose is to educate municipalities, residents and landscapers on how to care for their yards and gardens using less water and chemicals.

By signing up for this regional program, towns can cost effectively meet the federal stormwater requirements for educating their citizens about stormwater and water conservation. The program offers a comprehensive guide to environmentally friendly landscaping including workshop series, outreach materials, and school programs to participating towns.

Residents can create their own sustainable landscape by consulting the Greenscapes Guide.
