The answer comes down to two relatively simple steps:‹¨›/p‹˜›‹¨›p‹˜›‹¨›span class‹´›‹²›tadv-format-panel‹²›‹˜›1. Minimize water use in new development to the extent possible and, ‹¨›/span‹˜›‹¨›br /‹˜›‹¨›span class‹´›‹²›tadv-format-panel‹²›‹˜›2. Offset the rest by reducing water use elsewhere in the community. ‹¨›/span‹˜›‹¨›/p‹˜›‹¨›p‹˜›Sounds simple, but adopting this new paradigm will require both a new mindset and easy to implement tools for regulators to use. Ipswich River staff and municipal partners across the region have been working together to demonstrate how this can be done, especially with regard to accommodating the region’s critically needed affordable housing. Since adopting our new N‹¨›a href‹´›‹²›https://www.ipswichriver.org/blogs/new-net-zero-water-use-policy/‹²›‹˜›et Zero‹¨›/a‹˜› policy (aka Water Neutral Growth) in January 2019, we’ve been busy developing a tool kit to show regulators and developers how this can be achieved and the results look promising. With 5000 new housing units that plan to use Ipswich River water due to come online in the coming months there is no time to lose.‹¨›/p‹˜›‹¨›p‹˜›You can be a part of making new development (and re-development) on the North Shore better for everyone. While some new growth may be inevitable or even desirable, we can and should grow in ways that promote clean water, equitable sharing of resources and protection of natural areas. As we continue to roll out the new Net Zero toolkit around the watershed, please help us to encourage regulators in your town to utilize these tools when approving new projects. You can also prompt discussions about smart growth in your town, add low-impact development features on your own property, and support roll-out of the Net Zero toolkit by donating to our ‹¨›a href‹´›‹²›https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/IpswichRiverWatershedAssociat/AAdonate.html‹²›‹˜›Annual Appeal today‹¨›/a‹˜›.
