“The biggest surprise I had while volunteering at Ipswich River was just how much they do.”

Hello, I’m Alex Paul. I am studying environmental engineering at Purdue University and have the pleasure to be doing volunteer work for Ipswich River over the summer. The main project that I am working on is the herring habitat assessment of 4-mile pond in Boxford. This entails taking measurements and readings to see if it would be a good location for herring to be reintroduced.

You would not believe how peaceful and quiet it is being on a pond in a canoe at 8 in the morning is. Other projects I am working on at Ipswich River are macroinvertebrate identification and labeling, data entry and management, and assisting on other projects. I learned a lot this summer.

The biggest surprise I had while volunteering at Ipswich River was just how much they do. From the paddling trips, outreach, education, research and sampling, I was surprised how much work they do to protect and promote the Ipswich River and how I am just now discovering it.
