Students Collaborations Helping the River

Solstice Day School’s Outdoors Club returns for lunch after surveying the stretches of river up and downstream from Riverbend.

The Ipswich River Watershed Association is dedicated to working with local youth groups and increasing their involvement with the river. After all, they are the future of the organization! We are lucky to have so many amazing young people in the Ipswich River community, from Environmental Clubs, Scouts and after school programs. Among them are the students of the Solstice School Outdoors Club and the Climate Cafés.

The Solstice Outdoors Club students act as the River Wardens for our Riverbend landings. During the paddling season, you can thank them for keeping the landing in good condition and helping us keep the river passable. Along with their River Warden duties, these students are enthusiastic about fundraising. Their next effort will be to raise money for the Paddle-a-thon. Look out for more information on how to support their Paddle-a-thon fundraising.

Students present the summaries of their group discussions at the River Connectivity Climate Café.

We have collaborated several times with the Climate Café students, including a recent Walk ‹¯›amp; Talk they hosted at our Riverbend headquarters. At the cafés students lead group discussions that have covered topics ranging from the Great Marsh to Dam Removal. In May, as part of a global series of events that celebrate migratory fish for World Fish Migration Day, the Climate Café students will host a Herring Café on May 16th. This café will center around discussions of the historic and current importance of herring to the Ipswich River watershed as well as what people can do to help these species return to the river. This topic is especially relevant this year as there are various river connectivity efforts underway including a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation funded project to open up herring habitat in the Howlett Brook Watershed.
