Drip by Drip Adds Up: Fix Leaks During Drought

Did you know that household leaks can waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water annually nationwide? (image below from: https://www.epa.gov/watersense/fix-leak-week

That’s drinking water that has been pumped, treated, and transported into homes just to be wasted due to running toilets and dripping faucets! Fortunately, this can usually be an easy fix, which will not only save water but can also save homeowners about ten percent on their water bill.

Do your part to help conserve water by checking for leaks in your house during the EPA’s annual Fix a Leak Week! (March 16th – 22nd).

Here are some tips for finding leaks in your home:

  • Always check your water bill! If your bill is higher than normal, that can often be a sign of leaks.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.
  • Look for drips when the showerhead or tub faucet is turned off.
  • Under sinks, check for pooling water under pipes and for rust around joints and edges.
