Beginner Boats and Birds

Curious about kayaking, but not sure where to start? Want to spot some interesting wildlife, but don’t consider yourself an outdoorsy person? Join the Ipswich River Watershed Association (IRWA) and Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary for a birding excursion on the river!

This event is a friendly introduction to your drinking water resource, the Ipswich River, and all of the wildlife it supports! No experience or gear is necessary, and beginners to paddling, or birding, or both are strongly encouraged to join us. This program is for anyone who loves to be outside. We purposefully and intentionally welcome those who don’t see themselves in the stereotypical image of “outdoorsy” folks or “birders.” If you’ve ever felt too young, trans, queer, fat, disabled, neurodivergent, Black, brown, or any other too much or too little to be included in a birding or paddling outing, you have come to the right place.

Arrive at 5:45 for check-in and gear distribution. At 6pm, settle in for Mass Audubon’s presentation on the birds of the Ipswich River, and IRWA’s paddling demonstration. At 6:30 we’ll launch out from IRWA’s dock and keep our eyes open for ibis, heron, and more. We will be back on land by 8pm to return gear.

Enjoy your river, learn about the life the river supports, and spread your wings as a birder on the water! Space is limited – register today!
