Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Volunteer Training

Saturday, October 3rd, 10am-noon

What to expect:
We’ll begin with a brief overview of IRWA’s macroinvertebrate monitoring program and demonstrate our sampling protocol. Then, working in teams of 2–3, we’ll conduct in-stream sampling. While one team is in the stream, others can observe, practice completing monitoring data sheets, and learn about the sampling process.

We’ll preserve a sample for later laboratory sorting using denatured alcohol. If time permits, we’ll also collect a separate sample for streamside observation and give you a chance to try identifying macroinvertebrates yourself.

We’ll wrap up at noon. Before you leave, you’ll have an opportunity to sign up for future sampling locations and dates.

After completing this training, you’ll be able to assist an IRWA staff member with macroinvertebrate sampling and, with practice, conduct sampling independently for IRWA.

What to bring/wear:

High waterproof boots or waders (we have a few available – contact us!)
Bug spray
Light layers appropriate for the weather
Water bottle
Optional: small camp chair or sit-upon
