Young Activists Helping the River

(Left to right) Gianna Castellarin, Charlotte Losee, Uma Bhuju, Catherine Malatesta, Katie Bernard, Karleigh Odiet, and Marion Duval of the Masconomet Environmental Club collect trash at landings along the Ipswich River Water Trail as part of the Fall Riverwide Clean Up.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us on Saturday, October 26th for our Fall Riverwide Clean Up! Volunteers collected bags filled with trash that would otherwise have washed into the river and its tributaries. Instead of sinking into the river bottom, the plastic waste collected during the clean up will be used to create Ecobricks for a sustainability project by House Factory.

Ecobricks, like those that will be made from the plastic waste collected during the Fall Riverwide Clean Up.

House Factory is building pre-fabricated homes with a non profit mission to provide affordable, innovative and netzero homes to various social housing needs and are currently building an Ecobrick building (plastic bottle stuffed tight with other plastics). They have recruited two middle schools to build the 700,000 eco bricks to build a shed that will represent a compact eco home. Keep an eye out for future opportunities to get involved with the Ecobrick project.

We were very glad to have students from Masconomet High School and Malden Catholic High School participating in the clean up. They join other groups of young activists we are honored to work with such as the Ipswich High School Environmental Club, the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary Teen Conservation Club, the Climate Cafe students and the Solstice Day School River Wardens.

If you are, or know, a high school student looking to make a difference and accrue volunteer hours, please reach out to Rachel at [email protected]
