Intergenerational relationships strengthen communities … and we need YOU!

Do you want to make a difference for the Ipswich River? Help us teach folks about their precious water source, and what they can do to protect it, with the IRWA Education team of staff and volunteers! As an Education volunteer, you will gain new skills while sharing your valuable experiences with youth and adults from all over the North Shore.

All education roles will include training and a background check. Read on to discover the many ways you can join IRWA in our intergenerational outreach.

Tabling Events

Suggested commitment level: one weekend per month or every other month

Show and tell folks what we do at IRWA. Set up our station at STEM fairs, town festivals, and other tabling events to get the word out about keeping Ipswich River’s water clean and plentiful for generations to come.

Training consists of shadowing a tabling event with an IRWA staff person. Once you’re comfortable, we’ll send you with the set-up bin solo or with a fellow volunteer.

This role requires the ability to set up a table, lift a large box, and sit or stand for 2-4 hours, with or without help. Hours are mostly evenings and weekends. Youth volunteers are also welcome!

Floating Classroom – Field Trips

Suggested commitment level: one morning to early afternoon per week in July/August

Join us this summer as we welcome young guests to Riverbend. As a Floating Classroom volunteer, you might greet groups, help put boats in the water, or (if you’re up for it!) even lead a paddle or on-land educational activity with support from IRWA staff. You can do as much or as little as you like.

Save the date! Training day is Thursday, May 11, 4-6pm.

This role is flexible, but requires weekday/workday availability primarily in June, July, and August. Most visiting groups are at Riverbend between 9-3, M-F. Youth volunteers ages 15+ welcome!

Floating Classroom – Visiting Schools

Suggested commitment: one morning or afternoon per month during the school year

Our classroom “floats” to students too! Year-round, we visit school and afterschool groups to get kids engaged in protecting their river and its abundant wildlife. Join IRWA staff on trips to K-12 schools and clubs. You might help lead a station, read a story, or facilitate a craft.

Training consists of a one-hour onboarding meeting with the Environmental Educator and, then, learning-by-doing with support from staff.

This role is flexible, but requires weekday/workday availability. We visit most groups 9-3, M-F.

Youth Advocacy Events

Suggested commitment level: one event per month or every other month; ongoing mentorship as desired

The next generation of advocates needs your support! Share your passion for the Ipswich River with our youth advocates in high school and college. Your role may include:

  • Chaperoning events or travel (e.g. taking the train to an event with some students)
  • Speaking about your own experiences and sharing your knowledge
  • Attending Climate Cafes hosted by high school advocates
  • Acting as an informal mentor for young people in the area!

Training consists of a one-hour onboarding meeting with the Environmental Educator and, then, learning-by-doing with support from staff.

This role is flexible, with events popping up once a month or so. Most events will take place outside of working hours, with some notable exceptions.
