Remembering River Herring

Herring are returning to the Ipswich River and to mark their return we are putting together a series of home activities, videos and live remote presentations. These videos and presentations are part of our Ocean of Rivers project and its goal of reconnecting our communities with nature.

On Tuesday, April 7th, we presented Remembering River Herring, the first of the Ocean of Rivers remote events. The presentation, given by Ipswich River staff Ryan O’Donnell, Kaitlyn Shaw, and Rachel Schneider, explains what has happened to herring populations in the Ipswich River watershed and why it is important to bring them back.

Great for kids and adults, in this 45 minute presentation you’ll learn about the life cycle of river herring and the challenges they face as well as what Ipswich River and our partners are doing to restore herring habitat. At the end, Ipswich River staff answered submitted questions. If you have a question we haven’t answered, please let us know in the comments or email [email protected]

We are new to remote events, so please bear with us as we learn new skills in order to bring even more Ipswich River content to you. We apologize for the gray bar that occasionally appears on the screen. We have figured out the problem and will avoid that in future presentations. If you would like to play the audio, but follow along with the slides on your own, you may download the slides here. Get updates on more events and videos by following us on Facebook.

  1. I a former canoe-er of the River and, as a kid, an attendee at the Procter (Proctor?) Sanctuary day camp, i have a relatively inexpensive scheme for getting more rainfall into the ground to recharge the aquifer. Especially in the upper reaches where all the parking lots are. But i am shy about presenting the idea to see if it has any value. Wanna listen? (i dated myself with the reference to the Proctor Sanctuary, i think.)
