Hood Pond Walk

Hood (or Hood’s) Pond in Topsfield is more than a popular local beach. It is a historic spawning ground for herring. These migratory fish once swam all the way from the ocean up through Ipswich, Topsfield, and Boxford via Howlett and Pye Brook. We are looking to restore herring to the entire Howlett Brook watershed. Bringing a thriving herring population back to the pond will mean a cleaner, healthier pond for people and wildlife. This walk is part of the Ocean of Rivers event series funded by Mass Cultural Council grants. The events explore the annual dance of migratory fish in our rivers, oceans and ponds. Attendees are invited to attend a live performance produced by Fort Point Theatre Channel at the Town of Ipswich’s May 22nd Ipswich Local Color event. This audience-interactive dance is held at the Ipswich Mills dam, the first barrier to migratory fish on the main stem of the river.
