Fish Migration & Chebacco Lake
Celebrate the season by diving into the incredible journey of river herring! In 2024, an estimated 36,000 herring made their way from the ocean, up the Essex River and Alewife Brook, to their spawning grounds at Chebacco Lake.
Join Joseph Holbeche, Diadromous Fish Biologist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, as he explores the history of this vital fish run, its ecological importance, and the challenges these fish face. We’ll also hear from the Chebacco Lake & Watershed Association about the efforts underway to protect and sustain this crucial spawning habitat.
